How to Set Your Mind for Digitalization

Digitalization is changing how companies operate, how business models work, how regions and states function, the operation of the whole world, and, last but not least, how we live. It is no secret that the use of computers and smartphones has forever influenced our everyday way of life.

But the first step is not about buying a computer and installing a program… The first step must happen in your head and in your thinking. In your digital mindset.

Why do you first need to set a digital mindset in order to use digital tools properly?

The way you perceive and especially accept digitalization determines whether you can truly adopt and benefit from all the advantages it offers.

Let’s look at two simple examples.

Situation No. 1:

A person who thinks about digitalization as a necessary evil and whose only mastered tools are the basic functions of a smartphone and Facebook or Messenger, cannot take full advantage of the possibilities offered.

At work, they do not think about how they could use dozens of different applications to simplify and speed up processes or even eliminate less pleasant activities altogether.

Instead, they work with digital technologies only to the level required by their employer or their everyday needs and have no desire to explore what else they could actually achieve with their computer or smartphone.

Situation No. 2:

A person who looks at digitalization as an opportunity. And there are plenty of those opportunities.

Once you stop perceiving digitalization merely as the use of applications and technologies, you will find that you can simplify and improve your life in all areas.

You can also adapt digitalization according to your own experience. You use tools and aids only where it makes sense to you, and you actively seek new ways to make life easier through digitalization.

Someone may look at digitalization as a duty, a necessity, or an order dictated by progress, while you, on the other hand, can look at digital tools as an opportunity to spend your day doing what you enjoy, saving time, eliminating energy-draining activities, or learning something new.

These two digital mindsets represent two poles that directly determine how much you understand digitalization and, more importantly, how much you are willing to use its potential. And that is why digitalization is primarily about how you think about it, not about the tools it offers.

Digital Mindset Can Create Barriers or Open Gates

So, the question for you is whether you see innovative tools as a barrier, a complication, a burden, or as an extended hand that helps you handle thousands of activities with ease.

All it takes is to embrace digitalization, be willing to acquire digital skills, and start using digital tools.

The proof that mindset is truly important lies in how much it can either simplify or complicate your life.

An Example of a Digital Mindset

What about a manager in a company? They could call their team, which today often consists of Millennials and Gen Z representatives, or send them emails. Probably in vain. It’s different if the manager masters at least some social network, creates a group, and communicates with the team there. That is common practice today.

But if the manager has a truly good digital mindset, they will seek more advanced solutions and find a professional team communication tool, for example, Teams, which they implement and soon realize it makes teamwork much easier.

A manager with a digital mindset knows that they need to be in contact with their team, and therefore must look for solutions that are efficient but, above all, natural not only for them but for the whole team.

The manager saw it as a way to communicate effectively with the team, save time, and at the same time get more work done – in that case, digitalization becomes a gateway.

It’s No Longer About Change. It’s About Understanding Why It’s Happening

Do you think digitalization is changing something? The truth is, it has already changed everything long ago and has no intention of stopping.

So rather than about accepting change, it is about whether you want or don’t want to understand why this change is happening.

If you are a “digi-skeptic,” you probably think it’s happening because it’s a trend that will disappear one day. You assume it’s something bosses invented to complicate your life. You feel like it’s a change that forces you to learn something new again… Or you simply believe in conspiracy theories and think that digitalization is an invention of people organized in secret societies to make you buy Bitcoin.

And now let’s look at the other side of the same coin.

If you are a “digi-optimist,” you first try to understand why digitalization is happening rather than immediately accepting its consequences (in the form of tools or aids). Digitalization doesn’t want to impose anything on anyone but rather provide an opportunity to simplify, speed up, make processes more efficient, and often even more enjoyable.

The philosophy of digitalization is about moving forward. But it certainly does not mean that people will turn into machines working 12 hours a day, pulling night shifts without rest, being dependent on smartphones, and unable to survive a single day without their favorite app – as many people, to their own detriment, think.

Such thoughts and opinions arise from a misinterpretation of the main reason why digitalization began.

Digitalization Gives You a Free Hand

Now you know how important a digital mindset is for understanding digitalization and working with digital technologies. Its importance increases even more when you realize that it is a tool in your hands (not you in its hands) and that you are the one who has control over it.

The pace at which you digitalize your daily activities or work routine is fully controlled by you. You are also the one who can freely choose which tools to use to simplify your life. You are the one who sets the conditions and can even create your own solutions.

Those who have adopted a digital mindset know that things can be done in thousands of ways. The only limit is your understanding of the potential of individual tools and your own imagination.

Moreover, no one said you have to be 100% digitalized. Surely you know someone who writes notes in a diary but swears by Google Calendar. And that’s perfectly fine.

Digitalize in a way that suits you and feels comfortable. But always keep the digital mindset of an explorer who persistently looks for ways digital technologies can help in life.

6 Steps to Help You Set a Digital Mindset

1. Don’t perceive digitalization as a change that is about to come – it is already in full swing. Try to understand why things are digitalizing and what advantages it brings you.

2. Actively seek out digital tools and explore how they could be beneficial to you.

3. Don’t digitalize your entire life. Use digital technologies only where they feel natural to you at the given moment.

4. Digitalization is a process, so it is normal that it will take some time before you learn to work with digital tools and acquire sufficient digital skills. Step by step, you will progress further.

5. Using digitalization to the fullest does not mean you must know and master all the functions of every possible digital tool. It means that you understand how and when the tools can help you and that you can use these skills at the right time.
